La Mar

La Mar was inspired by my journey sailing across the open sea—a time when the horizon became home and each morning revealed a different place. The title evokes an intimate, almost spiritual relationship with the ocean: immense, unpredictable, and profoundly alive.

Expanses of turquoise and deep azure convey the boundless water, while sweeping lines of white and pale blue move through the composition like wind, waves, and powerful currents. At its heart, a fiery red centre emerges from richly textured gold—a sun, a compass, or perhaps the pulsing heart of the sea itself. Shimmering metallic forms resemble scattered islands, while fleeting shapes suggest whales, dolphins, fish, and seabirds appearing and disappearing within the blue.

Raised textures and three-dimensional elements extend beyond the painted surface, giving the work a tactile, almost sculptural presence. These relief-like forms catch the light and cast subtle shadows, causing the composition to shift as the viewer moves around it—much like the sea itself, never appearing exactly the same twice.

Layered colour and luminous detail recall tropical sunsets, salt spray, moonlit passages, star-filled skies, exhilarating movement, and the humbling solitude of life at sea. Part ocean, part cosmos, La Mar transforms personal memory into an abstract meditation on freedom, wonder, and humanity’s deep connection to nature.
